On June 2nd, the Piatt County Genealogical and Historical Society will host Lee Schofield, an expert on the American Flag. Schofield has given presentations at libraries and schools. Currently, he has a portion of his flag collection on loan to the State of Illinois and has advised the state government on matters of flag etiquette, as well.
In addition to his expertise on the topic, Scholfield is the owner of an extensive flag collection, ranging in age from 1898 to the present. The "Centennial" flag, his favorite, is a 134 year old, 13 star flag that was reproduced in 1876 to celebrate the 100th birthday of the United States. A 49-star flag is second favorite; a short-lived flag because when Alaska became a state, Hawaii had already applied for statehood. Many people waited for the 50 star flag. Along with the history of his flags, Schofield will share historic flag items and common flag etiquette.
The Society cordially invites the public to attend the meeting for the timely presentation on our American flag which will be on June 2nd 7:00 p.m. in the meeting room of the Piatt County Annex on South Charter Street in Monticello.
