McPherson's Hardware & Plumbing was started by my grandfather, Allen T. McPherson around 1915. It was located two doors down from Siders Drugstore on Bodman Street. My father, A.T. McPherson began working in the store in 1933, and took it over in 1939 when my grandfather was killed following a gas explosion while working on a furnace in a house on East Bodman. From the time I was big enough to reach the counter, I helped my parents at the store, which served as Bement's "Home Depot" at the time.
In 1950, my parents A.T. and Doris McPherson sold the store and moved to Ft. Lauderdale, FL. One of my fondest memories of growing up in Bement was winning three free ice cream cones in one day from Siders Drugstore.
