Hill's Cafe

E-mail Print PDF

Hill's Cafe was first opened in 1927 on South Macon. It moved to the corner of Macon and West Bodman in 1929. The picture shown is an advertisement taken from the 1955 Centennial Booklet. The cafe closed in 1958. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with stories, memories and any photos you have of the cafe.

“I started at Hill’s café in 1954 at $0.50 an hour and they took out $0.25 for any meal you ate that day. My bosses were Ella Hill McCabe and her sister Lois Hill.  Cooks were Marceline Lamb, Lena Wildman, Ruchiel Born, and Margie Lawson Ganley, among others. We closed at 11:00 p.m., but not until Ken & Kermit Body and any other of their friends came between 9:00 p.m. & 10:00 p.m. for their last coffee of the day. I worked there until April 8, 1957.”  Submitted by Irene Hooker

The ladies in the photo from the Centennial booklet (see below) were identified with help from Shirley McCabe Still and Irene Hooker. They are (from left to right) Mary, Florence Dobson, and Owner Ella Hill McCabe. Does anyone remember Mary's last name?
